Trick or Treating 2011

As is our tradition we all headed over to my parents house for trick or treating again this year. For the first time ever  one of the kids was not with us,  Beth, sadly was still in LA modeling. But Daniel and his girlfriend Megan were able to join us, even though they are now in their 20’s.

I’m not really sure what the kids were dressing up as, Thomas was just happy that he got to walk around carrying his sword. Since it is actually a real sword it is delegated to his bedroom and never allowed outside, normally.

There’s mom preparing our Baileys and coffee for the long walk. Mom, Dan and I still walk around with the kids, while Dad stays at the house passing out candy. The Bailey’s and coffee to-go make walking in the cold even more enjoyable!IMG_4453

And this is why the swords are not allowed out of the bedroom, you never know when Thomas may attack!

Here’s Daniel and Megan, aren’t they cute together? Daniel did make the comment that he thought this would be his last year going door to door for candy. Since he’ll be 21 next Halloween he thinks that’s a good time to stop. Dad will finally have someone to help him pass out the candy.

We were so happy Megan could join us, she lives in a little tiny town in Ohio about 2 hours away. Not only has she not been trick or treating since she was 12 years old (can you imagine?) but also she has never trick or treated at night since in her town they do it from 2-4. Now that’s just silly!

Thomas got all 16 pounds of his candy sorted by type. You wouldn’t want all that candy comingling!

Impromptu Halloween Party

As a friend so wisely said, “if you have two more families getting together than it’s a party.” And that’s what happened on Halloween night, one family asked if they could come by to trick or treat since they had missed their neighborhoods trick or treat night (the only advantage to having trick or treat on multiple nights around the city.) Then an email went out inviting others and the kids talked to their friends and before you know it 9 families, a few college kids, the neighbors and some extra kids thrown in just for fun descended on our house for a Halloween/ Trick or Treating party.

Most of the adults stayed at the house eating, drinking and having our own fun, while the kids were out gathering candy!

Here are a few of our friends in their costumes, heading out…

Even Ann got to go along, but Dan forgot to bring a bag for doggie doo doo, so I got an emergency call to bring a bag a few blocks over.

Here’s Dan already pilfering the kids candy. A few of the dads did go trick or treat with the kids, Dan went along to help direct everyone around the neighborhood. He may have not been the best choice for that job considering how long it took us to find him when we tried to bring a few late comers to the group. After 15 years of living here you’d think he would know the difference between the streets surrounding our house.

Here’s the group of teens off carousing the streets. While Beth is claiming to be dressed up like super-model Twiggy (she doesn’t really know who that is) and Karen is dressed in a 50’s ensemble the rest of the kids went for the ever popular look of American teenager.

Here’s our little Ros as a chicken.

Black and white was the theme of the night.

Finally trick or treating is done and now the very important candy sorting and swapping begins.

Daniel and some of his friends even came by for the festivities. They pretty much grabbed some food and spent the rest of the evening around the camp fire. But we always like when he comes home to visit.

and here’s Dan again looking for hand outs.

Engineering students and Halloween

IMG_3262Every year for Trick or Treating we go to my mom’s house and walk around her neighborhood for our candy collection. Since Columbus doesn’t understand that trick or treating is supposed to happen on Halloween we often get to double dip and go one night in Hilliard and another night in our neighborhood in Columbus. This year we had all the regulars players; Dan, Beth, Thomas, my mom & dad; we also had an unexpected visit from Daniel. He came home from OSU with 3 friends so they could stock up on candy to get them through midterms. It was nice seeing him and meeting some of his friends. They seemed like great kids that had no problem putting on a costume and trekking through the neighborhood. A positive difference between Columbus and the rest of the country, people don’t seem to mind when older kids trick or treat as long as they’re polite and wearing a costume. My kids have always trick or treated and no one has ever said anything about them being too old.

So after the allotted 2 hours of candy gathering (another difference from the rest of the country, the time is highly regulated. You trick or treat from 6-8pm and that is all. My kids would die if they knew in other cities you start at dark and stay out as late as you want.) Anyway after gathering more than enough candy we headed back to G-ma & G-pa’s house to examine the loot. Daniel and his friends were sharing 2 bags between the 4 of them. So what are 3 engineering students (and 1 undecided) to do with all that candy? Sort it into very precise piles, of course. Each candy was put in its own group; split up by type, size and color, then divvied up exactly equal. With a debate over who should get each extra piece when it wasn’t equal. It was all done very analytically exactly how you would expect a bunch of engineers to go about it!

What you may ask did we do with all that candy? IMG_3264

IMG_3261

Well the college kids took theirs back to campus where I’m sure it was devoured. But Bethany & Thomas, after a bit of cajoling on my part and a few days of candy eating, gave up what was left of their candy in exchange for $25 each. With all the hype about the flu and the effect that sugar has on lowering your immune system I just didn’t want them to have anything extra taxing their systems.
